Indoor playgrounds are becoming more and more popular now, especially the climbing walls in indoor playgrounds. Adults and children like it very much. So if we want to make a climbing wall at home, what should we do? The following are the steps and methods of how to build a climbing wall. I hope it will be helpful to you.
Site and design determination
The first choice for you should be indoor or backyard walls, suitable space, measuring length, width and height, considering the height of the roof and the flatness of the wall. Outdoors, you should also pay attention to the influence of wind, rain, sunshine and other climate. Then we plan the shape of the climbing wall and the distribution of rock points according to the site using drawing software or hand-drawing. Beginners can start with a simple straight wall, with reasonable rock spacing and difficulty gradients, and can also refer to professional rock climbing wall design cases.
Climbing wall material selection
If the DIY bouldering wall is a solid wall, we need to check the stability before using it directly; if it is unstable or a hollow wall, we need to install wood panels and OSB boards as the base plate to ensure sufficient load-bearing capacity. Waterproof and anti-corrosion plywood or metal frames + covering boards are commonly used outdoors, and metal frames must be treated with rust prevention, so that everyone can climb safely and reliably.

Climbing wall accessories list
For the base plate, we choose multi-layer plywood 18-20mm thick and OSB board as the load-bearing foundation. We choose waterproof/and moisture-proof models. The area is cut according to the wall size, and a 5-10cm edge is reserved for easy fixing. For the rock points, we choose resin rock points to provide climbing fulcrums. Buy 20-30 forehand, backhand, and finger hole types, and give priority to styles with anti-slip textures and thread adaptation.
For fixings, we need to choose expansion screws M8 - M10 and self-tapping screws. Expansion screws are used to fix the base plate to the wall. Self-tapping screws are used to fix the base plate to the rock point. Choose rust-proof models with a length of ≥5cm.
Rock climbing wall tools
Electric drill, level, tape measure Electric drill drilling 6 - 12mm drill bit.Protection High-density sponge pad thickness ≥30cm, laid on the ground under the wall to buffer the impact of falling, choose XPE material, area ≥ the projection area of the rock climbing wall. Installing rock climbing wall
First, we have to do it yourself to clean the dust and oil on the wall to ensure that the base plate fits firmly. If the wall is uneven, use cement mortar to level it, and then install it after it dries. Use a level to draw vertical and horizontal lines on the wall to determine the installation range of the base plate to ensure that the subsequent installation is not tilted.
Secondly, we need to use the elastic line to determine the horizontal and vertical references first, and use expansion screws to fix the wood board to the wall according to the plan. The screw spacing is 30 - 50 cm to ensure that the base plate is tight and stable with the wall. The level can be used to check the flatness. Use steel welding or bolts to assemble the frame, and ensure the strength and stability of the frame according to the design size. After the frame is completed, add screws to the cover plate, embed the screws into the plate surface without piercing, and seal the edges with outdoor glue for waterproofing.
Finally mark the rock point position on the base plate, insert the rock point bolt into the hole, screw the rock point onto the bolt, tighten it but do not excessively damage the rock point or base plate. During installation, you can try climbing to feel the position and difficulty, and adjust unreasonable rock points.

Safety inspection and finishing
After installation, we need to check whether the base plate is loose, whether the rock point is firm, and whether the frame welding or connection parts are firm. Install the anti-collision pad, lay it along the ground under the wall, and fix it with glue or fixing belt; use a scale to simulate climbing,
We can hang 50-100kg weights on the rock climbing wall and let it stand for 24 hours to check whether the base plate and rock points are loose. Wrap soft protective strips on the edge of the wall and the protruding parts of the frame to prevent scratches and injuries during climbing. If it is for children, it is recommended to install fixed anchor points on the top of the wall, connect the safety belt with elastic ropes, and teach children the falling posture of "feet first, knees bent to cushion"
Finally, we need to clean up the debris and dust left over from the construction, and then we need to try climbing ourselves, feel the grip of the rock points, the stability of the wall, and fine-tune the position of the rock points that are not smooth or fasten the accessories.
Maintenance and upgrade
We need to check whether the screws are loose and the rock points are worn every month. If the wear is serious, replace them in time and whether the protective pads are displaced. If the children are tired of playing, they can rearrange the rock points, design new climbing routes, draw rock climbing, etc., so that the children can keep fresh.

The above is about how to make a home climbing wall, but if the climbing wall is a complex structure or has high safety requirements, it is recommended to consult a professional climbing wall builder or an experienced climbing expert to ensure that the DIY climbing wall is safe and easy to use.
