The History of Playground Equipment

History of Playground Equipment

There was no concept of playgrounds at first, but they gradually developed into a perfect place for children to play, exercise and interact with other children. The first playground was built in 1859. I will introduce the development of ancient playgrounds and how they have evolved in the history of playground equipment.

Who invented the playground?

Among the inventors of playgrounds, the most famous one is Friedrich Froebel, a German educator in the 19th century. He advocated that games and playgrounds are tools for children's growth.

Let children develop freely in a natural environment. Emphasize that games are children's inherent instincts and the most important way for children to move around. Games can promote children's physical, intellectual and emotional development. Advocate that children learn and grow in autonomous activities.

When were playgrounds invented?

The period from 1821 to 1900 was an important stage in the development of playgrounds. The first large outdoor playgrounds were equipped with indoor gymnastics equipment such as vaulting horses and parallel bars. Then there were the more child-friendly Sand Gardens, which also added common equipment such as swings, ladders and seesaws.

1900s-1920s:

Many classic rides were created during this period, as were the first modern swings and slides. Giant walkways/maypoles, climbing structures, and carousels were invented. These created more fun in amusement parks.

1930s - to 1950s:

Development slowed down due to the Great Depression and war. Existed in the form of "adventure" and "junk" playgrounds. The concept of adventure playgrounds was first proposed. Added adventurous climbing structures, high-speed slides, etc. to bring more adventure excitement to children.

1940s to 1950s:

Novel playgrounds can only meet children's inner play needs. They need to have a stronger visual impact, so different themes and styles, such as space rockets and mazes, create a stronger visual impact and imagination. Modern playground sets also appeared to meet the play needs of different children.

1970s-1980s:

Standardized playgrounds. Due to the rapid development of children's playgrounds, slides, seesaws, swings and superstructures began to become safer. When designing children's play spaces, IPEMA-certified equipment was essential for playground safety.

1999 to present:

Comprehensive modern playgrounds, imaginative playgrounds are developing rapidly, various classic amusement facilities, and creative virtual reality provide children with rich play experience. These playgrounds have safe facilities and comfortable environment.

Today's playgrounds are still innovating, with innovative sensory playgrounds, natural-style playgrounds, and fitness and entertainment playgrounds, where you can jump and roll as much as you want, release your energy, and stimulate your imagination and creativity. It is an ideal place for children and adults to gather.
